SANS 10142-1 (wiring of premises)

SANS 10142-1 is the South African national standard for the wiring of premises at low voltage, published by the SABS. It is the code an electrical installation is tested against when a registered person issues a certificate of compliance, and its test report records the measurements: earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity and the earth leakage test among them.

What the standard covers

Conductor sizing and protection, earthing and bonding, the distribution board, socket outlets and lighting circuits, special locations such as bathrooms, and the tests to be done on completion. Solar installations have their own clauses covering DC isolation, labelling and the interaction with the earth leakage device.

Editions

The standard is revised from time to time and the current edition applies to new work. An older installation is not made unsafe by a new edition, but new work on it must follow the current one. The SABS sells the standard.

The certificate and the test report

The certificate of compliance states that the installation was tested against the standard; the test report is the evidence. Omni Field keeps both against the job and the address, and tracks the registration of the person who signed.
