e-CoC (electronic certificate of compliance)
An e-CoC is an electrical certificate of compliance issued electronically rather than from a paper certificate book, with a serial number held on a central record. The Electrical Contractors Association provides one to its members. It carries the same weight as the paper form, because the certificate is defined by its content and the registered person who signs it.
Why the paper book is going
A paper certificate can be lost, altered or issued from a book bought second-hand; an electronic certificate is numbered centrally, tied to a registered person, and retrievable when a buyer, a conveyancer or an insurer asks. Gas certificates made the same change some years ago, when paper books were withdrawn.
What does not change
The certificate must still be signed by a registered person under the Electrical Installation Regulations, still records an installation tested against SANS 10142-1, and still needs the test report behind it. A certificate issued by someone whose registration had lapsed is invalid in either form.
Where it lives afterwards
Omni Field does not issue certificates. It attaches the issued certificate and the test report to the job card against the client and the address, sends the copy to the client from the job, and tracks the registration and expiry of the person who signed it.
