PIRB (Plumbing Industry Registration Board)

The PIRB is the Plumbing Industry Registration Board, the body that registers plumbers in South Africa by qualification and experience and issues each a registration number. A PIRB-registered plumber may issue a plumbing certificate of compliance, which insurers and municipalities ask for on geyser and hot-water work. Registration is renewed with continuing professional development points.

What the PIRB does

The Board keeps the register of plumbers, sets the categories of registration by qualification and experience, logs the certificates of compliance its registrants issue, and requires continuing professional development to keep a registration current. The Institute of Plumbing South Africa is the separate trade association.

Registration is not required by law to do plumbing work, but insurers, municipalities and managing agents ask for a PIRB number before accepting a plumbing certificate, so in practice it decides which work a plumber can be paid for.

The plumbing certificate of compliance

A PIRB-registered plumber issues a certificate for work that must meet a national standard, most commonly a geyser installation under SANS 10254. The certificate is logged against the plumber's number and an insurer can check it on the register.

Keeping registrations current

Omni Field holds each plumber's PIRB number and expiry date in the certification register, alerts at 90, 30 and 7 days before renewal, and can block assigning a plumber whose registration has lapsed to a job that requires it. The certificate itself attaches to the job card against the address.
